Project Overview

The Northern Writers Awards from New Writing North, and supported Arts Council England and Northumbria University, are dedicated to nurturing up and coming writers from the North of England.

In 2023, I won the Hachette Children’s Novel Award, a huge achievement for me as an emerging writer. Since winning, I’ve been building on this success by taking up mentoring and development opportunities, and securing Arts Council England funding.

What I Did

I completed a 50,000 word contemporary mystery novel for 9 – 12 year olds, which I’m now editing.
My mystery novel won the Hachette Children’s Novel Award at the 2023 Northern Writers Awards.
As part of my prize, I’ve been being mentored by Hachette Children’s Group and supported by New Writing North’s talent development programme.
As a result of winning the award, I set up as self-employed.
I secured my first grant as an independent creative through Arts Council England’s Developing Your Creative Practice scheme which is supporting me in 2023 and 2024.
