Project Overview

Coming out of the pandemic, I began conversations about how to connect women and non-binary people working in technology in the North East, and the idea of a regional network was born. With other dedicated volunteers, in 2022 we established first an online community, and then we started regular in-person events.

We now have over 1000 community members. We’ve delivered seven fully-booked network events in Newcastle, Gateshead and Durham, working with sponsors including Aspire Technology Solutions, Credera UK, Marra, Womble Bond Dickenson and Gateshead College. And our work has been covered widely by the media, including Dynamo North East, Bdaily, UKTN and High Life North.

Fast forward to 2024, and based on this amazing growth and the clear demand for this network, we realised we needed to work towards ensure Women in Tech North East’s sustainability. Transitioning from a voluntary organisation, in Spring 2024 we became a Community Interest Company and secured our first start up funding. We’re now on an exciting journey to futureproof our work and make more of an impact, and Women in Tech North East is becoming my first freelance client.

What I Did

  • In Spring 2022, I worked with the other voluntary community organisers to set up the network and I led on regional PR about the network’s launch.
  • I secured our first sponsor, Newcastle University’s School of Computing, enabling us to run our first in-person event, which I co-organised, in Summer 2022.
  • In Summer 2023, I collaborated with Waterstons to plan and deliver our first Durham meetup.
  • In Spring 2024, I led on our Community Interest Company registration, becoming a Co-Founder and Executive Director
  • I secured the CIC’s first funding in Spring 2024, from Newcastle University StartUp, meaning essential start up costs are being met.
