Project Overview

From August 2019 to March 2024, I managed digital research and social innovation programmes at Open Lab, a world-leading research group in interaction design and ubiquitous computing at Newcastle University.

I was responsible for the strategic management and operational delivery of the EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Digital Civics. I worked closely with the academic directors and was responsible for administration and communications for the CDT, as well as organising training events and activities. Alongside my work on the CDT, I provided management support to Newcastle University and Northumbria University’s EPSRC Digital Economy Research Centre (DERC, 2015 – 2021) and EPSRC Centre for Digital Citizens (2020– 2025) during my time working with Open Lab. I also acted as a member of the core bidding team for the EPSRC NortHFutures Hub (2023 – 2026).

These programmes trained and supported researchers to explore how emerging digital technologies can promote civic engagement, and I worked closely with Open Lab’s industry and community partners and stakeholders.

What I Did

  • I took over the management of the CDT and DERC programmes, which hadn’t had a manager for the previous two years when I took on the role.
  • I supported Open Lab to launch their MSc in HCI, with growing student numbers since it began in 2020.
  • I won a TechWomen100 award in 2020 for my work as an emerging female technology professional.
  • I worked on collaborations and partnerships for the Lab’s bid for the EPSRC Centre for Digital Citizens, securing £3.7m from UKRI.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked on co-ordinating an emergency PPE production project, which won a Dynamite Award for Project of the Year
  • I was the Project Manager for the first year of the Centre for Digital Citizens programme, engaging over 70 partners in our launch events.
  • I successfully managed the closedown of the £4m DERC programme, including end of grant communications and reporting.
  • I worked on partnerships and collaborations for the Lab’s bid for the EPSRC Northern Health Futures Hub, securing £3.3m from UKRI.
